The History of
Davidson United Methodist Church
and
Davidson Methodist Church
This Methodist Society was organized is 1833 in a "Class Meeting" which met at the Reynolds Schoolhouse in South Strabane Township. In 1850 the first church, Providence Chapel, was built near Reynolds School. Dickerson Roberts, Asa Roberts, Daniel Harford, Peter Camp, and C.W. Aikens were the acting trustees when the new chapel was built.
In the following years the congregation grew rapidly. Therefore in 1867 a new church was erected in Glyde, PA on land donated by Mr. Dager. The new church was dedicated on Sunday December 29, 1867. It was named in honor of Mr. W.A. Davidson who was presiding elder of the district.
The congregation voted to separate from the United Methodist Church in July of 2024 and reconstitute as an independent denomination that follows the Wesleyan theology. The congregation voted to rename the church Davidson Methodist Church. These changes were made so that the church could focus on the mission of supporting those within their community.
Over the past 135 years the church building has been remodeled several times to reflect the needs of the congregation and the changing times. Most notably the front was changed from two entrances on the original building to the single entrance currently. Although the building and the faces have changed over time, the church has continued to be a source of strength and inspiration to its members.
